The Taipei bus system is excellent. Unfortunately it is not very English speaker friendly and takes a little while to get used to. Use these guides to get a better idea of how the busses work.
The local bus system is very easy to use once you get used to it. The hardest part is figuring out which bus goes where and getting your route mapped out.
Payment:
. You can use your Easy Card or use cash. The bus charges either 15nt or 30nt depending on the length of your trip.
When to pay:
You will either have to pay when you get on the bus, when you get off the bus or both times. To know when to pay look at the red sign. If the left part is lit up then you pay when you get on, if the right side is lit up then you pay when you get off the bus. Sometimes you have to pay both times if you stay on the bus for a longer trip.
Schedule:
The hardest part about using the bus is figuring out which busses go where. None of the bus route signs are in English. Once you figure out which busses go where the city is a lot easier to get around. To find the bus routes you can either go to the Department of Transportation (Shifu rd. no. 1, 6 fl) and pick up an English map (sometimes they are out of them) or you can check out the online route finder and map by clicking here.
Busses to Other Cities:
The bus is a great way to get from one city to another. Busses are cheap, comfortable and they run late into the night. But are a little slower than their train counterparts but usually more comfortable.
Where to Catch the Bus: The main bus station is located west of the railway station and the MRT main station. It's on the corner of ZhongXiao W rd. Sec. 1 and ChongQing N rd. Sec. 1. You can check out the web site, but it's all in Chinese. http://www.kingbus.com.tw/
Buying Tickets:
The bus station services all major cities in Taiwan. To buy your ticket just head up to the counter and say the name of the city you want to go to. There are numbered terminals around the sides of the station. Find the one matching the city you want to go to, and hop on when your bus arrives. Unless you plan on traveling during Chinese New Year or other major holidays you don't need to reserve tickets and can simply buy them the day of your trip.
Busses to CKS Airport:
Busses to the airport are cheap and they run frequently. It's a good alternative to a taxi if you aren't in a hurry.
Where to
Catch the Bus:
The station for airport busses is different than the one for city to city busses, although they are very close to each other. Go to the corner of ZhongXiao W. rd. Sec. 1 and GuanQian rd and you'll see it on your left.
Buying tickets:
You can purchase your tickets inside and to the left. Tickets for adults cost 125nt one way. After buying your ticket head to the left side of the station to board your bus. Busses on the right side will go to KeeLung.
Schedule:
Busses to the airport run from 5am to 11:30 pm. Busses depart every 15-20 minutes. For more information you can call the main office at 08-0001-0138 but you will rarely get a person who can speak English.
