What is a Ping?
Taiwan uses it's own special unit of measurement for floor space in apartments and homes called the ping. Japan has a similar measurment called the 'jo' and Korea has a similar unit called the' pyong'. When you rent an apartment the size will usually be given to you in pings. People say that a ping is about the size of one tatami mat but this is a little misleading. As you may have guessed tatami mats do vary in size, so using one as the standard for measurement can be difficult. I should mention here that tatami mats do have standard sizes in most asian countries but often they are modified and the size varies from one country to another.

Three tatami mats, all of different sizes. |
Instead of using a tatami mat for your measurement, stick to something you do know. Here are the conversions for more traditional western measurements.
ping |
square foot |
square inch |
square meter |
square centimeter |
1 |
35.57' |
5122.76" |
3.305m |
33,050cm |
To convert to or from pings go here:
For those of you that have forgotten what a square foot or meter is, you just multiply the width by the length, it works like this:
|
|
= one square foot |
|
|
= four square feet |
|
|
= six square feet |
 |
|
= 36 square feet or
about one ping |
Hopefully this will clear up any confusion about the pings.
