Safety in Taipei:
Taipei is an incredibly safe city. There are very few cases of assault or burglary. The government does publish a personal safety list for foreigners which includes such items as:
- Avoid ostentatious displays of money or jewelry.
- Decline the service of a taxi drivers who pulls over to the sidewalk to solicit your ride.
- Carry a self-defense device when outdoors.
Most of these suggestions are unnecessary.
Taxi:
While Taipei is comparatively very safe, there have been instances of taxi drivers taking advantage of young drunk girls. My old roommate had her boobies grabbed at and I've heard some other similar stories. If anything happens you should call someone on your phone, this usually dissuades the uncouth driver from pursuing his zany antics. If this doesn't work then just get out.
Internet:
As with any city you can meet the occasional weirdo online. In Taipei you will have less of this but it's still a good idea to meet people first in a crowded place, like a coffee shop or restaurant instead of their house or other private place. Just use good judgment and you'll be fine.
